Lead, SD - Day 23

Stats: We rode 90 miles under sunny skies with temperatures near the mid 80's.  We moved into South Dakota today, the fifth state of our journey.  The real treat of the day came as we approached Lead.  After riding 89 miles, we had to negotiate a 1 mile very steep climb into our campsite at Leads High School.  But that was not all, once there we learned that the football field for tenting was up another 88 steps.  And THAT was not all, since I arrived at camp ahead of Tom and being the good riding buddy that I am, I carried his and my duffel bags up the stairs and set up both our tents.  Needless to say we double checked each time we headed out from our tents to make sure we didn't forget anything.  Dinner tonight was at the Golden Hills Inn, a 3 block walk.  We had some bad news today.  One of our coast-to-coast riders, Larry, fell ill and had to stop riding.  He left the group at the end of the week.  Anything can happen at any time and we are very aware that a successful trip requires skill, determination and a lot of luck.  A bit windy on top of the hill as we bed down tonight.
