Iron Mountain Road

Next on our route after the Bison was a left turn onto Iron Mountain Road, a 15 mile climb and descent in the Blackhills National Forest.  It is known for its rock tunnels and pigtail bridges.  The first tunnel at the top of our climb shown here frames a view of Mt. Rushmore at the exit.  Later on in our descent, tunnels 2 and 3 had the famous pigtail bridges at their exits.  The Pigtail Bridge exits out of the tunnel, then curves around and the road continues under itself.  The second one did a double loop spiraling under itself twice.  It was pretty exciting for us spiraling downhill on a bicycle but we all survived.
