On the Road to Custer - Day 24

We headed south today towards Custer with warm temperatures and clear blue skies.  The up and down into Lead was reversed so we had a nice warm up, 10% climb for 2.7 miles, out of Lead.  We crossed the George S. Mickelson Bike Trail which runs for 109 miles from Lead through the Black Hills past Custer to Edgemont, SD.  We did not take it.  The first diversion of the day was a coffee stop at the Rockford General Store, a 5 building oasis in the middle of nowhere.  Dan (ON) and Tom are enjoying the moment.  Shortly thereafter we took a 10 mile route on a gravel road which saved all of us some climbing and distance.  It still had some significant elevation which on gravel was tiring.  However the day was beautiful and the scenery of lush green hills was outstanding.  Final sight of the day after lunch was the Crazy Horse Memorial which I did not go into but observed from the entrance gate.  It is a work in progress started in 1948 and continuing today with private funding.  In the picture the profile of the face is on the top.  The large block below and to the right will be the horse's head and the arm of crazy Horse.  After that it was off to Custer.
